What is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy?

  • How does this therapy work?

  • How could this therapy help me?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy or ACT helps patients learn to behave more consistently with their own values. Helping people apply mindfulness skills in uncontrollable situations. However it is a mindfulness-based behavioural therapy that challenges some western approaches to psychology.

How does Acceptance and Commitment Therapy work?

The ACT therapy invites you to accept your reactions and be present. Then you then choose a valued direction and take action.  ACT is an eclectic mix of metaphor, paradox, and mindfulness skills. Along with a wide range of  exercises and values-guided approaches. ACT is used for patients affected by OCD, Depression, Anxiety and Trauma and PTSD.

How could this therapy help me?

The goal of ACT is to create a meaningful and prosperous life. Part of the process is teaching people to accept the challenges and pain of life. ACT is guided by our deepest values with the hopes that we can attend and create abundance and acceptance within our existence. Additionally ACT emphasises the development of calming approaches.

This therapy can be extremely helpful in treatment. However at Boutique Psychology it is not our long-term approach. We believe It is best used throughout a series of differing techniques.
